Dejan Lovren explains why Liverpool’s derby win was so important

The Liverpool defender explains the importance of their win in the Merseyside derby

Dejan Lovren has underlined the importance of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby victory in the Premier League title race.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were 1-0 winners against Everton in the derby at Goodison Park on Monday night thanks to Sadio Mane’s winner in the fourth minute of added time.

Liverpool hoisted themselves above Manchester City and into second place in the Premier League table thanks to their 1-0 win against the Toffees.

The 18-time English champions are six points adrift of Chelsea in the title race after the Blues were 1-0 winners against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Croatia international Lovren, though, believes their derby triumph highlighted the kind of victories that Liverpool need to be able to etch out to win the title.

“There are a lot of games in front of us and it will change many times, but games like this you need to win if you want to stay in the race for the title,” Lovren told Liverpool’s website.

Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season after Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.

The Reds signed seven players in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to turn his squad into top-four challengers.
