Dietmar Hamann issues stern warning to Jurgen Klopp over Liverpool signing
The Liverpool legend has warned Jurgen Klopp that dropping Loris Karius would break the Reds goalkeeper
Dietmar Hamann has warned Jurgen Klopp that dropping Loris Karius would “destroy” the Liverpool goalkeeper.
The Germany Under-21 international was signed in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to strengthen his goalkeeping options.
Karius has replaced Simon Mignolet as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Reds manager’s starting line-up after his switch to the Anfield outfit from Germany’s top flight.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled to impress since taking over the number one mantle after a series of nervous performances against Swansea City and Manchester United.
Karius was at fault for two goals as Liverpool lost 4-3 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last weekend, which led to criticism of the German shot stopper.
However, Hamann doesn’t believe Klopp should necessarily drop his summer signing ahead of Liverpool’s clash against West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
“There’s been a lot of questions about the goalkeeping position at the club, but you have to stick with Loris Karius,” Hamann told Paddy Power.
“You need a top keeper to win trophies and Karius has to improve. The fourth Bournemouth goal was a bad mistake and he should really have stopped the second one as well.
“Once the fans get on your back in Liverpool, it’s not an easy place to turn it about. The only player to do that in the last 15 years was Lucas.
“But if you take Karius out of the team now you destroy him. But there is no doubt he needs to settle down and up his performances.”
Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table and four points behind leaders Arsenal after 14 games.
