Dietmar Hamann: What Liverpool need to start showing under Jurgen Klopp
The former Liverpool midfielder says Jurgen Klopp needs to win a trophy at Anfield this season
Dietmar Hamann says Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool’s side need to prove that they are a good side by finding a way to win even when the Reds aren’t playing well.
The Merseyside outfit will be looking to recover from a 4-3 loss to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League last weekend when they take on West Ham on Sunday.
The 18-time English champions lost ground on their title rivals Chelsea after Antonio Conte’s side were 3-1 winners against title rivals Manchester City.
Liverpool have only lost two Premier League games in the 2016-17 season after the Reds lost 2-0 to Sean Dyche’s Burnley side at Turf Moor in August.
However, Hamann admits that he still has his doubts over Klopp’s Liverpool side ahead of their clash against West Ham United on Sunday evening.
“Jurgen Klopp simply has to win a trophy with Liverpool this year or next. But is it possible with this group of players?” Hamann told Paddy Power’s blog.
“Too often when the chips were down the team has crumbled. The manager’s brought in some new players, however there is still a question over some of the old guard and if they have what it takes to win major titles.
“Good teams find ways to win, average teams find ways not to. Liverpool simply haven’t shown enough.
“Klopp has changed the mind-set of the people in the city and the club, but the collapse at Bournemouth is something we’ve seen quite a few times in recent years.
“With all due respect to the Cherries, if you can’t defend a two-goal lead against them then I struggle with what happens when Liverpool come up against a top team.”
Liverpool are in third place in the Premier League table and four points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
The Reds are the Premier League’s leading goal-scorers after a return of 35 goals in 14 top-flight games.
