Emmanuel Petit: This is why I’m not confident about Arsenal
The Arsenal legend explains where he thinks Arsene Wenger's side need to improve
Emmanuel Petit has questioned the Arsenal defence after ruling the Gunners out of the title race.
The north London side entered the Premier League weekend unbeaten in 12 top-flight games since a 4-3 defeat by Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in their opening 2016-17 fixture.
Arsenal have improved defensively since that erratic performance against Jurgen Klopp’s side after Gunners manager Arsene Wenger signed Valencia centre-half Shkodran Mustafi.
The Germany international has formed a solid centre-half partnership with Frenchman Laurent Koscielny after knocking Brazilian Gabriel Paulista down the pecking order.
Arsenal have the third-best defensive record in the Premier League this season, with only Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur conceding less goals than Wenger’s men.
However, former Gunners midfielder Petit has raised questions over Wenger’s back four as Arsenal look to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2003-04.
“They’re missing a couple of players. Defensively, I’m not confident. Last year, they were performing defensively well. I think they’re dropping points because of their defence,” Petit told BT Score after Chelsea’s 3-1 win at Manchester City.
Petit was part of Wenger’s first Premier League-winning side in 1998 as the former France midfielder helped the Gunners complete the double.
