Paul Merson states prediction for Everton v Liverpool
The former Arsenal midfielder is tipping Everton and Liverpool to play out a thrilling 2-2 draw at Goodison Park
Paul Merson is backing Everton to secure a point against Liverpool in what should be a thrilling Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Monday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are looking to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City for the Premier League title in the 2016-17 season.
The Reds made a swift return to winning ways on Wednesday night thanks to a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.
Adam Lallana scored either side of half-time against the promoted side before Divock Origi continued his impressive goal-scoring run.
Everton, on the other hand, recorded a much-needed Premier League victory on Tuesday night after the Toffees were 2-1 winners against Arsenal.
Seamus Coleman cancelled out Alexis Sanchez’s first-half opener before Wales international Ashley Williams headed a winner with minutes remaining at Goodison Park.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is tipping a high-scoring game between Everton and Liverpool on Monday night in their first Premier League fixture before Christmas.
“Liverpool are massive favourites here, but this is a Merseyside derby, a leveller, so anything can happen,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If Everton can play like they can, like they did against Arsenal, getting in their faces, they can get a win. If they play like they did in the first half against Arsenal, sitting off and allowing Liverpool to come at them, then Liverpool will win.
“Liverpool at the back are not good enough, but going forward they are the best around at the moment, and have goals from everywhere. It really should be a great game, with goals.”
Liverpool started the weekend in second place in the Premier League table.
