Ex-Tottenham midfielder on Dele Alli: He reminds me of this Chelsea legend
Danny Murphy says the Tottenham starlet is similar to Chelsea icon Frank Lampard
Danny Murphy has likened Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard despite the England star’s tough second season at White Hart Lane.
The Spurs playmaker was one of the surprise packages of the 2015-16 Premier League season after Alli scored 10 times in 33 appearances in his first season in the English top flight.
The 20-year-old was named the PFA young player of the year less than 12 months after the attacking midfielder swapped League One side MK Dons for Premier League outfit Tottenham.
However, Alli has only managed to find the net four times in 16 Premier League appearances so far this term as Mauricio Pochettino’s side endured a stuttering start to the season.
Writing in his Evening Standard column ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Southampton on Wednesday evening, former Spurs midfielder Murphy drew comparisons between Alli and Chelsea icon Lampard.
“Dele Alli had an outstanding first season in the Premier League and even though some disagree with me, I believe his performances have been strong in his second season,” Murphy wrote.
He is similar to Frank Lampard in the way he appreciates space and times his runs to ensure he finds great goalscoring positions. He is hard for midfielders to track, or for defenders to pick up when he is running towards them.”
Tottenham are in fifth place in the Premier League table and a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal ahead of their trip to Southampton.
