Former Man United star explains what’s changed for Chelsea
Owen Hargreaves has been extremely impressed by what he has seen Antonio Conte's Chelsea this season
Owen Hargreaves has credited Antonio Conte for masterminding Chelsea’s brilliant turnaround in form this season.
The Italian coach watched his Chelsea side make it 11 wins in a row in the Premier League on Saturday as they secured a 1-0 victory at West Brom thanks to Diego Costa’s goal in the first half.
Their brilliant winning run has moved Chelsea up to be the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.
It is in stark contrast to their dismal displays last season, when they finished in 10th place and without a trophy following Jose Mourinho’s sacking.
And Hargreaves feels that Conte deserves plenty of praise for the turnaround he has triggered since his appointment as Mourinho’s successor over the summer.
Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Hargreaves said: “The biggest problem Chelsea had last year was work-rate and effort.
“Eden Hazard was a shadow of the player that he normally is and Diego Costa under-performed as well.
“Their effort was not what it needed to be and they brought in a manager who demands effort first and foremost.
“He’s found a set-up that suits these players and it works beautifully.
“He deserves a ton of credit for demanding more from his players but also getting the best out of them.”
Chelsea won the Premier League and League Cup under Mourinho back in 2015 before he was sacked by the Blues 12 months ago.
