Former Tottenham midfielder delivers ‘magical’ verdict on Arsenal striker

The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder heaps praise on Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez

Danny Murphy believes Alexis Sanchez is more than capable of playing as striker in Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side.

The Gunners eased to a 3-1 victory over Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Alexi Iwobi after Charlie Adam’s opener from the penalty spot.

Sanchez has been utilised in a centre-forward role throughout the 2016-17 season so far after previously cutting in from the wing in Arsene Wenger’s side.

The South American has scored 11 times in 15 Premier League appearances so far this term, including a spectacular hat-trick in a 5-1 win against West Ham United at London Stadium earlier this month.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Murphy explained why he isn’t surprised by Sanchez’s success playing in a centre-forward role.

“He mixes his game up well. He is talented player. I saw him play for Barcelona as a striker a few times,” Murphy told BBC One’s Football Focus show.

“He has got all the abilities you need to be a number nine. But if you need to switch him, he can do that. He is magical. He can play anywhere.”

Sanchez moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal from La Liga side Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window.
