Gary Cahill explains what has changed for Diego Costa at Chelsea this season
Gary Cahill has been very impressed with Diego Costa's improvement for Chelsea this season
Gary Cahill believes that Diego Costa has become better at controlling his temper and keeping his composure this season – to Chelsea’s benefit.
The Spanish striker has earned plenty of praise for the strong start he has made to the season and was again in top form on Saturday as he helped to inspire Chelsea to a 3-1 win at Manchester City.
Costa seems to be rediscovering his top form under new boss Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge this season, with the striker already having scored 11 goals and made five assists in the Premier League this term.
The striker’s temperament has often been called into question during his time at Chelsea.
However, Cahill believes that the forward is gradually becoming calmer on the pitch and his learning to keep his composure to make sure he can help Chelsea as much as possible.
Speaking to Chelsea’s website after Saturday’s clash with Manchester City, Cahill said: “I’ve seen more composure for him, the first half didn’t go ideally for us and we were starved of the ball a bit, likewise he was, so he was scrapping around and not quite getting the opportunities.
“In the last few years maybe he would have got frustrated with that but he kept his cool and in the second half he got more involved with the game.
“The players around him are playing really well, when we haven’t got the ball they’re having to defend and they’re doing that excellently at the moment.”
Chelsea are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
