Gary Neville admits he couldn't believe how Arsenal's performance levels dropped in the second half at Manchester City
Gary Neville has admitted that he could not believe how tired Arsenal’s players looked in the second half of their defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.
Arsenal had made a bright start at The Etihad and took the lead early on when Theo Walcott slotted home from close range.
However, the Gunners’ performance levels dipped after the break and City soon equalised through Leroy Sane.
Raheem Sterling then netted the winner to claim all three points for Pep Guardiola’s men and send the Gunners crashing to their second 2-1 defeat within a week.
The result was a serious blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes and left the Gunners in fourth place in the table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea heading into the festive period.
However, Neville was more surprised about the lacklustre nature of Arsenal’s performance after the break at The Etihad.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday night, Neville said: “I couldn’t believe it. Arsenal’s players looked absolutely knackered. They were walking.
“They’re 2-1 down in a massive game where they can go right back up to Chelsea and put some pressure on, and it was walking pace.
“You never walk on a football pitch. There was a lack of interest. These players normally work hard and they normally put a shift in.
“They might not be the mentally toughest players in the world but there was something fundamentally wrong with them in the second half.”
