Gary Neville delivers honest verdict on Liverpool signing
The Manchester United legend reiterates his thoughts on Liverpool signing Loris Karius's 'anxious' performances
Gary Neville has explained his comments about Loris Karius and the Liverpool signing’s anxious start to life at Anfield.
The Germany Under-21 international was criticised for his stuttering performances in the Liverpool first-team in recent weeks after a 4-3 loss at Bournemouth and a 2-2 draw with West Ham United at Anfield.
Neville highlighted Karius’ disappointing performance against the Cherries before the summer signing responded to the Manchester United legend in an interview with The Daily Mail.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Match of the Day pundit Phil Neville were critical of Karius’ piece in the media after the Merseyside outfit’s 2-2 draw with West Ham earlier this month.
It promoted Liverpool boss Klopp to get involved as he delivered a withering verdict on the former England right-back as Neville responded to Karius via social media.
However, the retired Manchester United defender Neville attempted to clarify his comments about Karius ahead of the Merseyside derby on Monday.
Neville told Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement show on Sunday morning:
“I’ve watched the boy [Karius] a number of times over the last three or four months, he is a little anxious in his performances. He is a young goalkeeper.
“I watched him in the Liverpool v Man United game. It was a little too quick for him. Nothing I’m saying here is overly critical. Liverpool have been shipping 50 goals or more over the past two or three seasons, not just because of goalkeeper issues but defensive issues.
“At the moment, it’s not looking like it’s getting any better. The young goalkeeper is a little bit anxious and nervous – that’s an observation and not a criticism.”
