The former Manchester United defender has drawn up a shortlist of players who could replace Michael Carrick
Gary Neville has drawn up a shortlist of midfielders that could replace Michael Carrick in Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United squad.
The 35-year-old is in the twilight of his Premier League career although the experienced midfielder has signed a new one-year contract with the Red Devils.
Carrick has helped to steady Mourinho’s midfield in recent weeks after being partnered alongside Spain international Ander Herrera and world-record signing Paul Pogba.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United midfielder has made seven Premier League appearances in the 2016-17 season so far.
Ex-Manchester United defender Neville has named Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos as four possible candidates to become Carrick’s long-term successor.

Manchester United were 2-0 winners against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns last weekend after Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored either side of half-time.
The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 13 points behind leaders Chelsea in the title race.
Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
