Gary Neville: This Chelsea midfielder came through big test
The Manchester United delivers his verdict on Cesc Fabregas' performance against Manchester City last weekend
Gary Neville says Cesc Fabregas came through a big test of his abilities in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City.
Antonio Conte started with the Spain international alongside summer signing N’Golo Kante in the heart of his midfield despite Fabregas being out-of-favour under the Chelsea manager for most of the 2016-17 campaign.
The Blues midfielder played a crucial role in the west London side’s triumph at the Etihad Stadium as the Premier League leaders were forced to come from behind in successive weeks in the top flight.
Fabregas’ lofted ball released Diego Costa to cancel out Gary Cahill’s first-half own goal before Willian and Eden Hazard netted goals on the counter attack in the second half.
Former Manchester United defender Neville praised Fabregas’ performance in Chelsea’s impressive 3-1 win against Pep Guardiola’s side which extended their winning run to eight games.
“It was an absolutely incredible pass to Diego Costa. It was an incredible pass,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It was a connection we saw many times during that first season when they played together. I was doubtful because he empties midfield sometimes in big games. I don’t think as the game panned out he caused Chelsea a problem defensively. They were more exposed today but that was because of Manchester City’s good play in offensive areas.
“It was a good day for Fabregas. He has come through a big test.”
