Gary Neville: This is what Jose Mourinho and Man United will be thinking in top-four race
The Manchester United legend believes the Red Devils' 1-0 victory over Tottenham can kick-start their top-four bid
Gary Neville believes Manchester United will be feeling more confident about their top-four prospects after Sunday’s 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had managed to win just two of their previous 12 Premier League fixtures to leave them well off the pace ahead of the visit of the north London side to Manchester.
However, Jose Mourinho’s summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a first-half winner with a superb goal after Ander Herrera intercepted Harry Kane’s poor pass and teed up the Armenia international.
Manchester United moved to within six points of fourth-placed Manchester City thanks to their slender win against Mauricio Pochettino’s side at the Theatre of Dreams.
Former Red Devils defender Neville believes Mourinho and his United players will now have the top-four back in their sights after a morale-boosting Premier League win.
“They couldn’t afford to lose. If they lost, they would have been nine points behind,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It would have been a terrible position to be in this side of Christmas. Now, three points behind Tottenham and other teams have dropped points, Manchester United will think here we go now.”
Mourinho signed four players in the summer transfer window after the former Chelsea manager took over the reins at Old Trafford in May.
