Gary Neville unveils Jose Mourinho’s first big Man United moment
The Manchester United legend explains why Sunday's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur could be significant
Gary Neville has described Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur as the first big moment of his Old Trafford career.
The Red Devils eased to a slender win against Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Sunday afternoon thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s first-half winner.
Spain international Ander Herrera managed to intercept possession before the midfielder teed up £30m summer signing Mkhitaryan.
The 20-time English champions moved to within six points of fourth-placed Manchester City after the Citizens lost 4-2 to defending champions Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Former Manchester United defender Neville highlighted Sunday’s 1-0 win as the significant moment in Mourinho’s first season in charge at Old Trafford ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
“It was a big moment. I can’t think of a time this season when Jose Mourinho had a big league win: Liverpool away was a draw, they drew against Arsenal, lost away at Chelsea and lost here to Manchester City,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It was the first really big win in the league for Jose Mourinho. It was a big moment and they’ll gain a lot of confidence from that.”
Manchester United appointed former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May.
The Red Devils signed four players in the summer transfer window as Mourinho looked to revamp his squad.
The 20-time English champions are 13 points behind current leaders Chelsea.
