Gary Neville: What David Luiz has improved at Chelsea
The Manchester United legend has been impressed with David Luiz's performances for Chelsea this season
Gary Neville believes David Luiz has improved his decision-making since his return to Chelsea.
The Brazil international returned to the west London side in a £32m deal from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
Luiz made a suspect start to his second Blues career after Chelsea lost to title rivals Liverpool and Arsenal in his opening two games in the Premier League.
However, the South American has barely put a foot wrong since Chelsea manager Antonio Conte opted to switch a 3-4-3 formation.
The Premier League leaders have won their last 11 top-flight games and have kept an incredible nine clean sheets during that run.
Luiz has been excelling alongside England defender Gary Cahill and Spain international Cesar Azpilcueta in Conte’s back three.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show after Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Everton, former Manchester United defender Neville singled out Luiz for special praise.
“I think the [Chelsea] system suits him. I’ve talked about him being cuddled by his goalkeeper, by Azpilicueta and by Cahill. But also his decision-making has been far better in terms of not being as rash.
“He’s got a fantastic pass and is dominant in the air. I thought he was outstanding away at Man City, clearing his lines at the near post when crosses were coming into the box. Chelsea’s record with him in the team is absolutely fantastic.
“I didn’t see him as a fit at all with Conte. However, he’s been outstanding. I have to say he looks more mature, he’s not getting distracted by the sideshow stuff on the pitch like he did before. He looks to me to have a really good focus. He’s a key figure in that spine for Chelsea.”
Chelsea are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and six points clear of second-placed Liverpool.
