Gary Neville: What Jose Mourinho must do to unlock Man United confidence
The Manchester United legend believes Jose Mourinho needs to win a trophy after conceding the Red Devils can't win the title
Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho needs to win a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford to build confidence at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are looking increasingly unlikely to win the Premier League title this season after dropping points at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
The 20-time English champions played out a 1-1 draw with Everton after Leighton Baines’ 89th-minute penalty cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first-half opener.
The Red Devils have remarkably drawn 1-1 in their last three Premier League games against Arsenal, West Ham United and Everton to leave them 13 points behind leaders Chelsea.
Manchester United are nine points adrift of Manchester City despite Pep Guardiola’s side losing 3-1 to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Neville, who won the Champions League twice during his Old Trafford career, explained what Mourinho needs to do to unlock confidence at Manchester United.
“Jose normally wins a trophy in his first season. I think that the League Cup becomes important,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“It’s opened doors and unlocked confidence for him in the past. That’s important. But I do think they have to get towards the top four.
“I do believe that they’re not good enough. Looking at the other teams… Tottenham, Liverpool, City and Chelsea at this moment look strong in terms of where they’re at, but it could change in the next few months.”
The Red Devils booked their place in the EFL Cup semi-final last week after a 4-1 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford.
