Gary Neville: What Liverpool need to improve to beat Chelsea to the title
The former Manchester United defender explains why Liverpool need to improve their defensive record
Gary Neville has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool need to improve their defence if the Reds are to win their first-ever Premier League title.
Liverpool were dramatic 1-0 winners against Everton on Monday night thanks to Sadio Mane’s added-time winner to hoist the Reds into second place in the Premier League table.
Klopp are six points behind Chelsea in the title race after Antonio Conte’s side recorded their 11th successive victory on Saturday afternoon thanks to a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion.
The Merseyside outfit have never won the Premier League title but narrowly missed out on the top-flight crown in 2013-14 after Brendan Rodgers’ side collapsed in the final games of the season.
Liverpool have already conceded 20 times in 17 games in the Premier League this season after shipping 50 goals in the 2016-17 campaign.
Former Manchester United defender Neville warned Klopp that Liverpool must improve defensively if the Merseyside outfit are to have a chance of winning their first-ever Premier League title.
“They have one huge failing and it cost them a league title a few years ago, those players have to seize this moment now and recognise what is costing them – and it is this: Their record defensively is poor,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“They’re conceding 43, 50, 48 and 50 goals – and they’re on target to hit that [number] the way they’re going again.”
Neville added: “If they can correct this, if they can pull together the two centre-halves and the goalkeeper like the way Leicester did with Huth, Morgan and Schmeichel, they could win the league. The doubts there remain.”
