Graeme Souness issues blunt warning to Arsenal duo
Graeme Souness says Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil cannot expect a huge pay rise at Arsenal
Graeme Souness has told Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil that they will need to prove that they can help Arsenal win major trophies before getting a big pay rise.
The futures of both Ozil and Sanchez have been a source of speculation in recent weeks as the duo enter into the final 18 months of their contracts at The Emirates.
Ozil and Sanchez’s contracts at Arsenal are set to expire in the summer of 2018 and both players are thought to be in talks with the Gunners about extending their current deals.
However, Liverpool legend Souness has warned both Ozil and Sanchez that they cannot expect to be able to demand huge contracts until they prove that they can help Arsenal win major honours.
Speaking to Sky Sports last week, Souness said: “They’re asking for [the kind of] money that is given to the players who win big trophies – and they’re not winning big trophies, yet.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and without a trophy.
The Gunners won the Premier League in 2014 and 2015 under Arsene Wenger.
