Graeme Souness issues blunt warning to Arsenal

Graeme Souness has his say about Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez's contract situations at Arsenal

Graeme Souness has warned Arsenal that they must tie down Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to new contracts if they want to continue to establish themselves as one of the Premier League’s top clubs.

There has been plenty of speculation about the futures of both players after they entered into the final 18 months of their contracts at The Emirates.

Neither Sanchez or Ozil were able to prevent Arsenal from slipping to a disappointing 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

That defeat was their second in a row in the top flight and left them a staggering nine points behind Chelsea in the title race heading into the hectic festive period.

It remains to be seen whether Sanchez and Ozil will commit their futures to the club, but Souness has talked up the importance of the message it would send out to the rest of the world of football.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s game, Souness said: “It’s a real watershed moment for Arsenal.

“If they don’t sign those two players – two players who that have proven that they can be arguably their two best players – going forward what’s that saying about Arsenal?
