Graeme Souness uses Chelsea star to make point about Man United striker
Graeme Souness talks up the importance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester United this season
Graeme Souness believes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proved himself to be more important to Manchester United than Diego Costa at Chelsea this season.
Ibrahimovic once again underlined his importance to Jose Mourinho’s United side when he scored both goals in their 2-0 win over West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Costa had continued his fine form for Chelsea by netting the Blues’ winner in their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace to help the west London side extend their lead at the top of the table.
However, the Spanish striker picked up a yellow card at Selhurst Park, meaning that he will now miss Chelsea’s Boxing Day clash against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Souness was asked about how important Ibrahimovic has been since his arrival at Manchester United in the summer, and the Scot delivered his verdict on the new Red Devils star.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Souness said: “As important as Costa is to Chelsea, I think Ibrahimovic is even more important to Man United.
“I said at the start of the season for United to challenge he has to stay fit and be the main man – and he’s proving that.”
He continued: “I’m also a fan of Michael Carrick. In that position he has very few players who come anywhere near him.
“The balance they have right now is making them dangerous. If they get on a roll they will take some stopping.”
