Ian Wright questions why Arsene Wenger won’t play Arsenal signing

The Arsenal legend wants to see Arsene Wenger give Lucas Perez a chance

Ian Wright admits he is bemused about Arsene Wenger’s refusal to give Arsenal signing Lucas Perez a chance to shine in the starting line-up.

The north London side have endured a miserable week in the Premier League as the Gunners fell nine points behind Chelsea in the title race.

Arsenal squandered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Everton at Goodison Park last week after Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams overturned Alexis Sanchez’s opener.

Theo Walcott gave the Gunners a fifth-minute lead at The Etihad on Sunday before Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling netted in the second half to seal a 2-1 win for Manchester City.

Perez scored a hat-trick earlier this month when the uncapped Spanish forward was handed a rare start in Arsenal’s 4-1 win against Basel in the Champions League group stage.

However, Wright can’t understand why Wenger didn’t turn to Perez against Everton or Manchester City given his recent goal-scoring form.

“What’s really quite annoying, you know Olivier Giroud will come on. We paid £17m for Lucas Perez and he scored a hat-trick the other day in the Champions League,” Wright told BBC’s 606 podcast.

“He must be feeling like he wants to play and to get on the pitch. He’s got pace. Bring him on! What has he bought him for if we’re still going to play Giroud?”

The 27-year-old was signed in a £17m deal from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer transfer window.
