Ian Wright slams Arsenal over failure to sign this striker
The Arsenal legend is still angry that the Gunners wasted their chance to sign Luis Suarez
Ian Wright has slammed Arsenal over their failure to sign Luis Suarez.
The Gunners made a controversial offer of £40m and £1 for the Uruguay international in the 2013 summer transfer window but the north London side’s attempts to secure the striker’s signature were emphatically rebuked.
Suarez went on to score 31 times in 33 Premier League games and was awarded the 2014 PFA player of the year award as Liverpool finished in second place in the table.
The South American completed a £75m move to La Liga giants Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014 and the centre-forward won the treble in his first season at Camp Nou.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes someone at the north London club should have been sacked for their failure to land Suarez.
“When you consider how much he went for and when you consider how much he changed Liverpool, he’s gone to Barcelona and he’s not just fit into that team, he’s improved their team,” Wright told BBC’s 606 podcast.
“What should have happened is the person who made the phone call to say we’re going to activate the clause, that person at Arsenal should not be at Arsenal. He should be sacked. It’s a sackable offence.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira inspired the Gunners to title glory.
The Gunners won back-to-back FA Cups in 2014 and 2015 before finishing in second place in the title race last term.
