Ian Wright: Why I can understand this Arsenal star being linked with Barcelona

The Arsenal legend believes Hector Bellerin is among the top three right-backs in the world

Ian Wright believes Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin is one of the best right-backs in the world.

The Spain international has established himself as Arsene Wenger’s first-choice right-back over the past 24 months after skipping ahead of France international Mathieu Debuchy in the pecking order.

Bellerin was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year thanks to his impressive performances at full-back throughout the 2015-16 season, scoring one goal and making five assists in 36 games.

The 21-year-old defender has continued his excellent performances this season despite suffering an ankle injury following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby in November.

Bellerin was linked with a move to Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester City in the summer, while the Spanish defender has emerged as a potential target for La Liga champions Barcelona in recent months.

However, the defender signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal earlier this season.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Everton at Goodison Park on Tuesday night, Wright delivered a glowing verdict on the Spain international.

“He was a massive miss. When he’s playing, Arsenal fans are much happier. Going forward he’s brilliant. This is why he was linked with Barcelona,” Wright said.

“He’s just getting better. He’s up there in the top three right-backs in the world, easily.”
