Insider’s blunt response when asked if Diego Simeone could become Arsenal manager
Guillem Balague claims that Arsenal aren't even looking to appoint Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as Arsene Wenger's replacement
Guillem Balague has emphatically quashed talk of Arsenal appointing Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates.
Arsenal lost 2-1 to title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon to prompt renewed criticism of long-serving manager Wenger.
The Gunners have now suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats to leave the north London outfit a staggering nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and Wenger’s men have failed to reach the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010.
Simeone has regularly been linked with the Arsenal post in recent seasons amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Wenger’s long-term future at The Emirates.
Asked whether Simeone will take over at Arsenal from Wenger when the Frenchman finally calls time on his Gunners career, Balague told Sky Sports:
“When I get asked this I always say the same thing, Simeone’s style couldn’t be further from the one Arsenal practice and the squad they have. It makes no sense whatsoever for Simeone to go to Arsenal and I don’t think they are after him at all.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but 10 points behind champions Leicester City.
The Gunners signed five players in the summer transfer window.
