Jamie Carragher delivers honest verdict on Man United’s hopes under Jose Mourinho

Jamie Carragher has his say on Manchester United's start to the season under Jose Mourinho

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Jose Mourinho faces a very tough task in trying to steer Manchester United back into the top four this season.

The Red Devils have made something of a stuttering start to life under the Portuguese coach since his appointment as Louis van Gaal’s successor at Old Trafford back in May.

United have struggled to find consistent form under their new manager and currently trail Premier League leaders Chelsea by a staggering 11 points after 13 games of the new season.

That gap has prompted many to rule United out of the title race this season, as Mourinho looks to turn the Red Devils’ fortunes around by targeting a top-four finish in the Premier League.

And Carragher feels that the Red Devils boss would quickly accept a top-four finish in the Premier League if it were offered to him now.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ before Wednesday night’s League Cup clash with West Ham, Carragher said: “He was still talking about the title before the game. He has to say that because that’s what he said when he first came in.

“He doesn’t want to be talking about the top four – that’s not achievement for Manchester United. It’s got to the title.
