Jamie Carragher: It looks like this will cost Liverpool the title
The Liverpool legend believes Jurgen Klopp's defence could undermine their Premier League title challenge
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s defence could cost Jurgen Klopp and his players their shot at Premier League title glory.
The Reds relinquished a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon following Nathan Ake’s added-time winner.
Liverpool are four points behind leaders Chelsea after 14 games after their first defeat since a 2-0 loss to Burnley at Turf Moor in August.
The 18-time English champions have already conceded 18 times, which is more than any of their Premier League title rivals.
Overtly, Liverpool have scored 35 goals to make them the Premier League’s highest goal-scorers ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea.
Speaking to Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Caragher delivered an honest verdict on the Reds’ prospects in the title race.
“From a Liverpool point of view of course you’re very disappointed. You go back to the last defeat at Burnley and at that stage people were questioning Jurgen Klopp in terms of the squad,” Carragher said.
“I think Liverpool won four or five games on the bounce from that so it’s a massive blow [the Bournemouth loss] for them. You’ve got to react and bounce back. Games like that put doubt in people’s mind whether Liverpool’s goalkeeper or defence is good enough to go and win a league title.
“Because that’s the talk of late [winning the title]. Will that let them down? It was the defensive side of Liverpool that cost them two years ago, so at this moment you’re thinking that could stop Liverpool.”
Liverpool will host Slaven Bilic’s struggling West Ham United side in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday evening.
The Reds have never won the Premier League title despite finishing in second place in the table in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
