Jamie Carragher makes prediction about Man United this season
Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United are now set to target Europa League success this season
Jamie Carragher believes that Jose Mourinho is likely to place more emphasis on the Europa League this season because he knows that it could be Manchester United’s best chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
The Red Devils have made a stuttering start to the new campaign under Mourinho following his appointment as the club’s new manager back in May.
United have been in stuttering form in the Premier League in recent weeks, to leave the Red Devils trailing leaders Chelsea by a staggering 11 points after 13 games of the new season.
It remains to be seen whether United will be able to haul themselves back into the race for a top-four finish during Mourinho’s first season in charge.
With United now looking unlikely to win the title, the emphasis will inevitably shift towards securing Champions League qualification.
And Carragher feels that the Red Devils are likely to take the Europa League more seriously this term because they know that winning it will secure a Champions League spot.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Carragher said: “He doesn’t want Thursday night football again [next season].
“You can see how strong he is going in the Europa League. He knows that is an avenue for the Champions League as well.
“When he first got in the competition he was really dismissing it. The results didn’t go well and he has had to go stronger now. So then they have the Thursday-Sunday situation.”
