Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Everton in Merseyside derby
The Liverpool legend reflects on a huge moment in the season for Jurgen Klopp's men
Jamie Carragher described Sadio Mane’s winner as a huge moment in their season after Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.
Everton were on top in the first half even though neither Premier League club were able to record a shot on target.
Brazil international Roberto Firmino had an opportunity to break the deadlock but the forward’s attempt was blocked by Maarten Stekelenburg.
The Liverpool number 10 was denied again from a Liverpool set-piece after Everton’s substitute goalkeeper Joel Robles managed to push the South American’s shot to safety.
However, Sadio Mane scored a winner in the fourth minute of added time after the forward reacted quickest when Daniel Sturridge’s shot rebounded of the woodwork.
Asked how big a moment Liverpool’s late winner could prove to be in their season as the Reds moved to within six points of leaders Chelsea, Carragher said:
“Huge. It is a big moment tonight. You win a derby game you enjoy it but the biggest thing is going second in the league.”
Carragher addded: “It was thoroughly deserved for Liverpool.”
Liverpool will host Mark Hughes’ Stoke City side in their next Premier League game at Anfield on 27 December.
The Reds will take on title rivals Manchester City on Merseyside on New Year’s Eve as Klopp looks to end 2016 on a high.
The 18-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title despite finishing in second place in 2009 and 2014.
