Jamie Carragher reveals what could stop Chelsea in the title race
The Liverpool legend believes injury to Diego Costa could be the only thing to derail Chelsea's title bid
Jamie Carragher believes injury to Diego Costa could be the only thing that derails Chelsea’s Premier League title challenge.
The Spain international scored a first-half winner at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon thanks to a close-range header following Cesar Azpilicueta’s superb cross.
The 28-year-old centre-forward has scored 13 goals in 17 Premier League games in the 2016-17 season so far to hoist the west London outfit to the top of the table on Christmas Day.
Chelsea have won their last 11 Premier League games to move them clear of their closest rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.
Asked what could potentially disrupt Chelsea’s momentum in the title race, Carragher told Sky Sports ahead of the Merseyside derby: “Looking at it now, an injury to Costa.
“He’s been the standout play in the Premier League so far. He looks like the player when he first came to Chelsea.
“I always felt Chelsea would have a good season. I tipped them to come second behind Manchester City. They have title winners, people who have been there.
“You’re talking about Eden Hazard, who could win the PFA player of the year again. The only thing that can stop them is injury, and especially to that main man up front.”
Chelsea haven’t lost a Premier League game since a 3-0 loss to title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in September.
The west London outfit finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last term under Guus Hiddink and Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea signed five players in the summer transfer window.
