Jamie Carragher: Romelu Lukaku needs to run like this Liverpool forward
The Liverpool legend delivers his verdict on Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku
Jamie Carragher says Everton star Romelu Lukaku needs to match the industry of Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino to fulfill his talent.
The Belgium international has scored seven times and has made three assists in 12 Premier League appearances under new manager Ronald Koeman.
Firmino, on other hand, has netted five goals and has also made three assists in 13 Premier League games for Jurgen Klopp’s men this term.
However, the Brazilian has run further than Lukaku and has also completed more sprints than his Merseyside rival.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the ex Chelsea striker has to run more if he wants to move to a bigger club in the future.
“Lukaku has certainly got talent. He and his agent, Mino Raiola, are never shy of telling us about that, but if he is to fulfil Koeman’s prediction then there is one thing he has to do more than anything else — RUN,” Carragher told The Daily Mail.
“Consider this: so far this season, he has been on the pitch for 1,017 minutes. Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino has played 1,067 minutes.
“In that time, Firmino has run 23.6 miles further than Lukaku and made 490 more high intensity sprints. The difference is colossal.
“He wants to play at a Champions League club but it’s the same with Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and even Sergio Aguero.
“They are all running further and harder than Lukaku.”
Everton will host Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Toffees are in seventh place and a point behind the Red Devils after 13 games.
