Jamie Carragher suggests Jurgen Klopp needs to make this signing for Liverpool
The Liverpool legend doesn't believe Jurgen Klopp's side will win the title with Lucas Leiva as third-choice centre-half
Jamie Carragher has appeared to drop a hint that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp needs to sign a centre-half in the summer transfer window.
Carragher’s former team-mate Lucas Leiva deputised at centre-half in the absence of injured Joel Matip on Sunday afternoon as Liverpool lost 4-3 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
The Brazil international has played as a defensive midfielder throughout most of his nine-year Liverpool career, although Klopp did use Lucas as centre-half on a number of occasions last term.
The Reds boss signed Matip on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window and the Cameroon international has developed a promising partnership with Dejan Lovren.
France defender Mamadou Sakho has been out of favour since the start of the season and Klopp has given no indication that the former PSG man is part of his plans at Anfield.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, Carragher appeared to suggest that Klopp may need to sign cover at centre-half if Liverpool want to win the Premier League title.
“People keep talking about Liverpool’s defensive problems – the back four,” Carragher said.
“If Lucas Leiva is your third choice centre-half, it’s probably not enough if you want to go and win the title.”
