Jamie Carragher: This Liverpool player has let the club down
Jamie Carragher comments on Roberto Firmino after the Liverpool playmaker was charged with drink-driving
Jamie Carragher has accused Roberto Firmino of letting Liverpool down after the Brazilian was charged with drink-driving.
The Brazilian playmaker was arrested on Christmas Eve after his car was stopped in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Saturday.
However, the attacker featured for Liverpool during their 4-1 win over Stoke City in the Premier League on Tuesday night and was named man of the match as he netted the Reds’ second goal at Anfield.
Carragher was impressed by Firmino’s performance against the Potters but underlined that the player has a responsibility to the club’s fans and players to act responsibly during the festive period.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Tuesday’s win, Firmino said: “It didn’t look like a couple of drinks on Christmas Day had affected him during the game.
“But he let his team-mates and his manager down, without doubt.
“As a footballer you’ve got to be very disciplined over this period. I was unsure whether he’d play or not.
“He’s a top player for Liverpool, there’s no doubt about that.”
The victory over the Potters lifted Liverpool up to second place in the Premier League and left them six points behind leaders Chelsea after 18 games of the season.
Firmino is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on 31 January.
