Jamie Carragher: This Liverpool striker has huge opportunity after Philippe Coutinho injury
The Liverpool legend believes Belgium striker Divock Origi will get a lot of first-team football in the coming months
Jamie Carragher says Divock Origi has a huge opportunity to stake a claim for a regular Liverpool starting spot after Philippe Coutinho’s injury.
The Merseyside outfit suffered a huge blow to their title hopes on Saturday after the Brazil international was taken off on a stretcher during the first half of their 2-0 victory over Premier League strugglers Sunderland.
Origi broke the deadlock in the second half with a clinical finish from inside Jordan Pickford’s area before Liverpool vice-captain James Milner extended the home side’s lead in added time.
The Belgium international hasn’t started a Premier League fixture this season after being limited to a handful of substitute appearances following the form of Liverpool’s forward players.
However, Carragher is tipping Origi to get a sustained run in Klopp’s starting line-up following Coutinho’s ankle injury.
“It’s a huge opportunity,” Carragher told Sky Sports on Tuesday night.
“He may get plenty of fixtures now over the next two months. Who knows how long Philippe Coutinho will be out? Daniel Sturridge has more quality in front of goals than Divock Origi but he is more Jurgen Klopp in terms of his work off the ball.
“Daniel Sturridge won’t be fit every week over the next couple of months. You know that. That’s his history. There are plenty of games for Origi to play.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind leaders Chelsea after 13 games.
The Reds will make the long trip to Bournemouth in their next Premier League game.
