Jamie Carragher: What Divock Origi will bring to Liverpool
The Liverpool legend discusses what Divock Origi will offer to Jurgen Klopp
Jamie Carragher believes Divock Origi will give Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a different option up front.
The Belgium international is expected to feature regularly over the festive period after Liverpool number 10 Philippe Coutinho suffered an ankle injury during their Premier League clash with Sunderland at the weekend.
Origi replaced the Brazil international in the 33rd minute and the centre-forward broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining before James Milner added a second in injury time.
The former Lille striker has found his first-team opportunities limited in the 2016-17 season so far, which is unsurprising given Klopp’s side have scored 32 times in 13 games.
However, Origi is being tipped to play a bigger role in the Liverpool manager’s side in the coming months after Coutinho’s setback.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s EFL Cup clash against Leeds, former Reds defender Carragher explained how Origi can improve Klopp’s side.
“He does [improve the side]. Roberto Firmino is a completely different striker. He gives you an aerial option,” Carragher said.
“Liverpool don’t play with wingers, so the full-backs provide the crosses. So he gives you an option there. He will offer something different.
“Liverpool will come up against different teams and find a different way of winning. He came on the pitch [against Sunderland] and found a different way of winning. He got his goal. He can score goals of crosses and be more of an aerial threat.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table but a point behind current leaders Chelsea.
