Jamie Carragher: Why Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to win first Liverpool trophy

The Liverpool legend explains why Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to secure his first trophy at the Merseyside club

Jamie Carragher has explained why Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to win his first trophy as Liverpool manager.

The Reds have been talked up as Premier League title challengers after extending their unbeaten run to 11 games at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool eased to a 2-0 win against Sunderland thanks to goals from Divock Origi and James Milner in the second half of the Premier League clash.

Klopp was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015 after Liverpool made a disappointing start to the 2015-16 campaign under the Northern Irishman.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager led the 18-time English champions to the League Cup final but lost to Premier League rivals Manchester City in the penalty shootout at Wembley.

Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat by Spanish side Sevilla in the Europa League showpiece in Basel to end their first season under the German coach without a trophy.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Leeds United, Carragher explained why Klopp will be desperate to secure some silverware as quickly as possible.

“It’ll be important for him to win a trophy – not just this competition but any competition,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“He was at his previous clubs seven years – Mainz and Dortmund. You’d be thinking something similar at Liverpool. You’ve got to win that first trophy. Who knows what it’ll be.”
