Jamie Carragher: Why questions have to be asked of Liverpool signing
Jamie Carragher delivers his verdict on Liverpool summer signing Loris Karius
Jamie Carragher believes Loris Karius deserves to be questioned after the Liverpool signing’s performances against Swansea City and Bournemouth.
The Germany Under-21 international was signed in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 in the summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looked to provide competition for Simon Mignolet.
Karius was named as the Liverpool number one in the summer and the former Manchester City youth star has been first-choice since his return from a broken hand in September.
However, the 23-year-old has endured a mixed start to his Liverpool career after a nervous performance in the Reds’ 2-1 win against Swansea City in September.
Karius appeared to be finding his feet at the Merseyside club after keeping back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier League against Southampton and Sunderland.
However, the German shot stopper was at fault for two of the four goals that Klopp’s side conceded in a 4-3 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday.
And Carrager explained his criticism of the Liverpool summer signing.
“The reason I was critical of Loris Karius was because you can’t expect your team to press constantly for 90 minutes. There will be games where people make mistakes,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show.
“There have been two games where he has been asked questions. One was Swansea and he struggled. He was lucky that day. He didn’t get the luck yesterday [against Bournemouth]. He got asked questions and he didn’t answer him.
“It’s still early days in his Liverpool career and I am not saying he is finished. But over the next 12 or 18 months, he has got to improve.”
