Jamie Redknapp: Dele Alli reminds me of this Liverpool legend
The former Liverpool captain can see similarities between Dele Alli and Steven Gerrard
Jamie Redknapp insists he can see similarities between Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli and Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard.
The England international has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s most-exciting players after the midfielder completed a £5m move to Tottenham Hotspur from MK Dons in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Alli was named the PFA young player of the year after the playmaker scored an impressive 10 times in 33 Premier League games in his first season in the English top flight to help Spurs challenge for the title.
The 20-year-old has endured a stuttering start to his second campaign in the Premier League despite managing to get on the score sheet in Tottenham’s impressive 2-0 win against Manchester City at White Hart Lane in October.
However, Alli appears to be finding his stride in the 2016-17 season after the English talent scored twice in Tottenham’s 4-1 comeback victory over Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Tottenham’s commanding win, Redknapp looked at the similarities between Alli and Gerrard.
“He’s got a good footballing arrogance that I’ve only seen a few times in my life,” Redknapp said.
“Steven Gerrard had it when he was 17 – he walked onto the pitch with the first team and you knew you were in the presence of greatness. It’s the same with Alli. He’s only 20 but he looks at all the other players and thinks ‘I’m better than you’.”
