Jamie Redknapp delivers verdict on Arsenal partnership: They’re the best since Invincibles
The former Liverpool and Tottenham captain has been impressed with Shkodran Mustafi's impact at Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp believes Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi are the best Arsenal centre-half partnership since Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles side.
The Gunners manager signed Mustafi in a £35m deal from La Liga side Valencia after Wenger looked to bolster his defensive options at the north London club.
Arsenal managed to go on a 14-game unbeaten run with Mustafi in Wenger’s starting line-up before the German defender picked up an injury in a 3-1 win against Stoke City in the Premier League last weekend.
Gabriel Paulista started alongside Koscielny in the absence of Mustafi at Goodison Park on Tuesday night and Everton ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory over the title contenders.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp made a bold claim about Koscielny and Mustafi after being impressed with the pair’s performance so far this season.
“Arsenal have problems of their own at the back,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“When I look at Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi, I see two fantastic defenders who are probably the best centre-back partners they have had since the Invincibles, but they lose for Mustafi for one game and they are already conceding poor goals from set pieces.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but 10 points adrift of champions Leicester City.
