Jamie Redknapp lavishes praise on Chelsea star: It’s the best I’ve seen in a long time
Jamie Redknapp heaps praise on Chelsea star Diego Costa after his sparkling display at Manchester City
Jamie Redknapp heaped praise on Diego Costa for the Spaniard’s impressive display for Chelsea against Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime.
The striker played a key role for Antonio Conte’s men as the Blues came from a goal down to secure a 3-1 win at The Etihad and secure their status as genuine Premier League title contenders.
Costa scored Chelsea’s first goal early in the second half before he set up Willian for the Blues’ second. Eden Hazard then wrapped up the scoring to secure a thumping win for the west London club.
Costa has been in fine form for Chelsea this season and has already scored 11 goals and made five assists in the Premier League for the Blues to help them top the table.
It is in stark contrast to Costa and Chelsea’s struggles last season, as they ended up 10th in the table and without a trophy.
And Redknapp was full of praise for Costa after Saturday’s game.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Last week all the talk was about who would triumph between Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa in the battle of the strikers but there was only one winner at the Etihad.
“Costa put on the best centre-forward display I have seen in a long time. He scored a goal, made another and despite being up against three defenders, Costa bullied City and ran them ragged.
“He is fit and firing and has completely changed his mentality — I’d love to know what Conte has done with him!
“Could you imagine the backlash if Costa had gone in for a challenge as bad as Aguero’s on David Luiz? We all see Sergio as the saint and Costa the sinner but this was the complete opposite.
“I was up in the stands on Saturday and could even see Costa acting as peacemaker during the fracas at the end.
“We are blessed with the quality of centre forwards in our league. Earlier in the season I would have said Aguero was the best of the bunch but now I have to pick Costa. He is the perfect all-round centre forward.”
