Jamie Redknapp: This Everton player can stop Liverpool duo
The former Liverpool captain believes Idrissa Gueye will have to be at his best to stop Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana
Jamie Redknapp has warned Idrissa Gueye that he will have to be at his best to stop Liverpool playmakers Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana on Monday night.
Everton will host their bitter rivals in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park as Liverpool look to hoist themselves up to second place in the Premier League table.
Lallana has been in scintallating form in recent weeks after a return of three goals and one assist in his last two Premier League appearances.
Firmino, meanwhile, has netted five times and has made three assists so far this term, while Lallana has scored six goals and has made six assists.
Gueye has started 15 of Everton’s 16 Premier League games so far this term following his summer move to Goodison Park.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Monday night’s Merseyside derby, Redknapp explained the role that Gueye will have to play if Everton are to secure a positive result against Liverpool.
“The other Everton player who needs to have a big game is Idrissa Gueye. He has been a great signing for them but he’s got a massive role to play on Monday. When I think back to the Merseyside derbies I played in, they were often won in the midfield areas.
“He’s got to stamp his authority on that Liverpool midfield. He can’t let the likes of Lallana and Roberto Firmino start picking the ball up and taking their time to pass it around. Everton have got to get in Liverpool’s faces like they did against Arsenal.”
Liverpool are nine points behind Chelsea in the title race.
