Jamie Redknapp: This Liverpool star has stepped up after Philippe Coutinho injury
The former Liverpool midfielder has been impressed with Divock Origi's impact since coming into the Reds side
Jamie Redknapp has admitted that he has been impressed with Divock Origi’s impact in the Liverpool side in recent weeks.
The Belgium international has been brought into the Liverpool first-team following Philippe Coutinho’s serious ankle injury last month.
Origi has made a positive impact on Liverpool’s performances after scoring in five successive games in all competitions.
The former Lille man netted in a 2-0 win against Leeds United to secure Liverpool’s place in the EFL Cup semi-final.
Origi has also scored four times in four Premier League games to help Jurgen Klopp’s men cement their place in the top four.
The Belgian forward was previously out-of-favour under Klopp before Coutinho’s injury in a 2-0 win against Sunderland at Anfield.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Monday night’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, former Liverpool skipper Redknapp delivered his verdict on Origi’s impact.
“There’s no doubt Liverpool miss a player of Philippe Coutinho’s quality, but Lallana has really stepped up and Divock Origi has also impressed me with five goals in his last five games,” Redknapp said.
“I was interested to see what Klopp would do without Coutinho. He could have gone a different way, but instead he told Origi, ‘You go out there and cause some havoc’. It shows his faith in the young man, and it has been rewarded.”
Origi moved to Liverpool in a £12m deal from Ligue 1 side Lille in the 2014 summer transfer window.
