Jamie Redknapp: This Man United duo are impressing me
Jamie Redknapp admits that he has been impressed by Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo's performances for Manchester United this term
Jamie Redknapp has admitted that he has been impressed by Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo’s performances for Manchester United in recent weeks.
Jose Mourinho has opted to pair the duo in the heart of the Red Devils’ defence in the absence of the likes of Eric Bailly for the last few games.
Rojo and Jones have earned plenty of praise for their assured performances at the back for the Red Devils in recent weeks.
United have won their last three games in a row in the Premier League to haul themselves back into contention for a top-four finish in the top flight.
And although Redknapp still feels Mourinho is likely to want to further bolster his defence, the former Liverpool star has been impressed by what he’s seen from Rojo and Jones.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return to form has coincided with the emergence of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones as United’s centre-back pairing. I wouldn’t have put Rojo and Jones together and I think Jose Mourinho will look to bring in another centre back.
“They are both prone to the odd mistake – in Rojo’s case he has been reckless with a couple of two-footed challenges recently – but they have been defending brilliantly and helping United win hard games.
“United are unbeaten in the seven games the pair have started together.
“You only need to look at Chelsea to see that when your defence is solid, your forwards are under less pressure and are less likely to panic in front of goal.”
Manchester United are aiming to break back into the top four this season after they finished fifth and won the FA Cup last term.
