Jamie Redknapp: This top Man United talent can emulate Kevin De Bruyne
The Liverpool legend delivers his verdict on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial
Jamie Redknapp believes Anthony Martial is a top Manchester United talent capable of emulating Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.
The France international has struggled under new manager Jose Mourinho in the 2016-17 season so far after the Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May.
Martial has scored one goal and has made three assists in eight Premier League appearances in the current campaign, although he did score twice against West Ham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old made a whirlwind start to his Manchester United career following his £36m move from Ligue 1 side Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Martial scored on his debut in a 3-1 win against Liverpool before going on to net 11 times in 49 appearances in all competitions.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp believes Martial has a big role to play under Mourinho if the Manchester United manager decided to place his faith in the French forward.
“You’ve got Anthony Martial who he is now saying has to change,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News HQ.
“Granted, he hasn’t had a good season – he has been struggling for a while now.
“But he’s the sort of player that if you let go, he could end up being another Kevin De Bruyne or Juan Mata.
“He is a top talent. He just needs an opportunity.”
The Red Devils are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of current leaders West Ham United.
