Jamie Redknapp: Why Cesc Fabregas really impressed me on Man City v Chelsea
The former Liverpool and Tottenham captain heaps praise on Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas
Jamie Redknapp has praised Cesc Fabregas for a nerveless performance after Chelsea’s 3-1 victory at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.
The Spain international was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Nemanja Matic despite a lack of first-team football under new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
In fact, Fabregas hadn’t started a top-flight fixture since the Blues’ 3-0 defeat by title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in September.
Chelsea had won seven successive Premier League games since Fabregas’ last start but the Spanish midfielder played his part in a significant result at the home of their title rivals Manchester City.
Fabregas’ superb pass teed up Diego Costa for Chelsea’s second-half equaliser after Gary Cahill’s won goal before Willian and Eden Hazard sealed three points with goals on the break.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Redknapp heaped praise on Fabregas after the former Arsenal captain managed to cope with the pressure of replacing in-form Matic.
“The pressure was on him,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“He would have been a little nervous about the pressure of Nemanja Matic being out [but] he didn’t put a foot wrong.”
Chelsea moved four points clear of Manchester City after their 3-1 win.
