John Barnes explains what Jurgen Klopp will be thinking about Liverpool duo
John Barnes delivers his verdict on Jurgen Klopp's decision to drop Loris Karius in favour of Simon Mignolet for Liverpool
John Barnes believes that Jurgen Klopp has already decided that Loris Karius will be his long-term number one goalkeeper at Liverpool, but says the manager has made the right decision by taking the German out of the firing line.
Karius endured a stuttering start to the season following his arrival at the club from Mainz in the summer transfer window.
The German was immediately handed the number one shirt at Anfield but his recent stuttering performances have led to Simon Mignolet being restored to the starting line-up for Liverpool’s recent wins over Middlesbrough and Everton.
Mignolet has impressed by keeping clean sheets in both of those games and Karius appears to have his work cut out in trying to force his way back into the starting line-up.
However, Liverpool legend Barnes feels that Klopp has already selected Karius as his long-term number one shot-stopper at Anfield.
“Mignolet played well [against Middlesbrough], he didn’t concede a goal,” said Barnes, speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sport Review.
“Obviously Jurgen Klopp likes Karius and he envisages him being the number one, and maybe he will be long-term, but I think that Klopp had decided to take him out of the firing line at this moment to alleviate the pressure – because he has been under pressure.
“I expect Mignolet to play but I support Karius as well – and I think Klopp does too. He understands that for a young goalkeeper, new to the country and having the pressure he’s been under…
“Klopp feels that there has been an agenda against him by some members of the media – he may or may not be right but I think it’s a wise decision to take him out of the firing line for now.”
