John Barnes explains where Liverpool must improve ahead of Everton trip

John Barnes believes that Liverpool need to show that they can pick up results in the Premier League even when not playing well

John Barnes believes that Liverpool must start to show that they are able to grind out results even when they’re not playing well this season.

The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season in what is Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge at Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit are widely considered to be one of the main contenders for the Premier League title this season and the Reds do not have the distraction of European football this term.

Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League in midweek when they beat Middlesbrough 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium following disappointing results against Bournemouth and West Ham.

And former Liverpool star Barnes feels that the Merseyside outfit must start to pick up results even when not at their free-flowing best.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sport Review, Barnes said: “They should be pleased that they are where they are – within striking distance of winning the league.

“Come January and February it’s about getting 0-0 draws or 1-0 victories so you’ll always try and shore up at the back because you’re not going to outscore teams for the whole season; you’re not going to play sparkling football all the time.

“Where Liverpool need to improve is by grinding results out; by not playing well and winning.

“At the moment, if Liverpool play well they win, if they don’t play well they don’t win.

“If you want to win the league you have to be able to pick up results even when you don’t play well.”

Liverpool finished eighth and without a trophy last season following Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015.
