John Barnes’ response when asked if Liverpool can win the title
The Liverpool legend plays down growing talk of Jurgen Klopp's men winning the Premier League title
John Barnes has played down talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League title this season.
The Reds were 3-0 winners against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night after Adam Lallana scored either side of half-time and Divock Origi netted in his fifth successive game in all competitions.
Liverpool managed to hoist themselves above Arsenal and into second place in the Premier League table after their impressive performance at Middlesbrough mid-week.
The 18-time English champions are bidding to win their first Premier League crown after finishing in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
Klopp took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015 and the former Borussia Dortmund boss led the Reds to an eighth-place finish last term.
While Barnes admitted that Klopp’s side are in with a chance of title glory alongside Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, the ex-Liverpool skipper played down the chances of the Merseyside outfit winning the top-flight crown.
“They can win the league but so can Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City,” Barnes told The Sport Review.
“Can Liverpool win the league? Absolutely, we can. But will we win the league? I don’t necessarily think we will.”
Liverpool signed five players in the summer transfer window.
