John Barnes believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could be tempted to sign an attacking midfielder or a centre-forward in the January transfer window.

The Merseyside outfit have made a solid start to the 2016-17 season under the former Borussia Dortmund manager as Liverpool look to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

The Reds were 3-0 winners against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night as Adam Lallana scored either side of half-time and Divock Origi netted in his fifth successive game to seal three points at the Riverside Stadium.

Liverpool have collected seven points from their last four Premier League games despite the absence of Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho and England striker Daniel Sturridge.

Speaking exclusively to The Sport Review ahead of Monday night’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Barnes discussed what areas Klopp could strengthen in the January transfer window.

“You need strength in depth. For example, you look at [Philippe] Coutinho being injured for the last few games and it looks as if we’ve missed him,” Barnes said, speaking exclusively to The Sport Review.

“If you can sign players to improve the squad, that’s what you do. I don’t think that there’s any position necessarily [that needs strengthening].

“Our centre-backs are looking quite solid and we still have other centre-backs who can come in. I don’t think there’s any real necessity in any position, it’s just whether you can get better than what you have.

“There is not any particular position that needs strengthening – we’re scoring goals and playing well, but I think that if an opportunity came up to buy a goal-scorer or an attacking midfield player of the same or better quality, that’s what we should do.”

Liverpool hoisted themselves into second place above Arsenal in the Premier League table after their 3-0 win at Middlesbrough.
