John Barnes: Why Jurgen Klopp needs to make Liverpool signings in January transfer window
The former Liverpool captain wants to see Jurgen Klopp to make some additions in the January transfer market
John Barnes has urged Jurgen Klopp to bolster his Liverpool squad with some signings in the January transfer window.
The Reds are in second place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of leaders Chelsea after 13 top-flight fixture.
The Merseyside outfit have never won the Premier League crown but have finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
Klopp was dealt a blow earlier this week after Philippe Coutinho suffered ankle ligament damage during a 2-0 victory over Sunderland in the Premier League at Anfield.
Speaking to talkSPORT after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Leeds United in the EFL Cup last eight, Barnes explained why Klopp should consider entering the January transfer market.
Asked if the Liverpool manager should look to make some additions, Barnes replied: “Absolutely.
“At the start if the season I don’t think they would have expected to be where they are, they were probably aiming [to challenge] next season.
“But considering they’re one point off the top coming towards January, why not just have a go now? Why wait?
“They’re a bit ahead of schedule, but let’s do it now. Don’t wait until the end of the season – this may be our opportunity.”
Liverpool signed seven players in the summer transfer window after the Reds finished in eighth place under Klopp in the 2015-16 season.
The Merseyside outfit added Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum, Ragnar Klavan, Alex Manninger, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic to their squad.
The Reds will return to Premier League action at Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.
